Course Memo

Course Description: • An EMT administers stabilization, transportation, and medical care to sick or injured persons, working as a member of an emergency medical team. Trained to determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, to follow treatment protocols issued by medical control, and to act as an extension of physicians, EMTs provide what is known as “pre-hospital” or “out-of-hospital” care. This course will prepare students to take the National Registry Exam in order to become a licensed EMT in Oklahoma. • Not a certification course-but will prepare students for licensure. Prerequisites: • There are no prerequisites – however, the student should be in good health and fit to carry out duties; be able to lift and carry 125 lbs.; have good coordination, dexterity, and strength, good eyesight, hearing, and speech; be aware of any color vision problems; able to give and receive oral and written instruction and communications. The student should be pleasant, sincere, cooperative, resourceful, a self-starter, emotionally stable, and able to lead. The student should have a clean and neat appearance, be of good moral character and respectful of others; be in control of personal habits, be controlled in conversation, able to communicate properly, able to listen to others and be non-judgmental and fair. Pertinent Information: • All books included in tuition. • Student must be at least 18 years of age. • No high school diploma or equivalency is required for enrollment. • Documentation of immunizations is required before the student can participate in clinicals. This will be discussed in-depth with student during the first night of class. • Documentation of personal health insurance is required to participate in clinicals. • Students will also be required to obtain a national felony record search to include a Sex Offender Registry search (this is not included in tuition) from an entity designated by Meridian Technology Center. This record search must be conducted after the individual begins the program. This will be discussed in-depth with students during the first night of class. Students who have a positive response will be reviewed for eligibility to complete training. • Students cannot miss more than 9 class periods (36 hours) or they will be ineligible to complete the class. • Students will spend 48 hours in clinical observations (12 at Stillwater Medical Center and 36 at an Emergency Medical Service). Clinicals are required for course completion; students should be prepared to make the necessary personal arrangements to ensure attendance is not in question. Professional EMT attire will be required for the clinicals. • Students will be certified in CPR (American Heart Association Healthcare Provider) during the course of the class. Certification is mandatory. • Students will complete a mandatory HAZMAT Awareness training, Bloodborne Pathogens training, and have a Respirator Fit Test as a portion of the class. • Students must certify in NIMS 100 and 700 (if not currently certified). These are mandatory for course completion and are available online (free of charge) outside of scheduled class and clinical hours. This will be discussed in-depth the first night of class. • Student will be practicing skills through various scenarios, so should dress comfortably, but appropriately. • Students will be tested throughout the course and must have an overall average score of 85 percent to be eligible to take the final comprehensive exam. Students must score 85 percent or better on the final exam to be eligible for class completion. • Upon completion of the course, students must pass the National Registry Practical Skills Exam and the National Registry written exam in order to be licensed. Meridian Technology Center will host a National Registry Practical Skills Exam within one month of each class completion. The exam fee is $75 and is not included in tuition. • Licensure must be completed within 2 years of training. • The State EMS department will conduct a criminal records check on each applicant before they will be eligible for licensure.
