Course Memo
Course Description:
• The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Course is designed for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses and paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for job or other requirements.
• This course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS for Healthcare Provider skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. It also highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac arrest care. ACLS also covers airway management and related pharmacology.
Prerequisites:
• Current BLS HealthCare Provider certification
• Study and understand the 10 core cases that are in the ACLS Manual
• Study and understand the algorithms for the 10 core cases in the ACLS Manual
• Complete and bring proof of completion of the Precourse Preparation Checklist before attending class.
Pertinent Information:
• All books included in tuition.
• Students must complete prerequisites and bring proof to course or they will not be allowed to attend the class.
• Students must attend the entire class to be eligible for completion.
• Students are encouraged to dress comfortably.
• For successful course completion, students must demonstrate skills competency in all learning stations, pass the CPR AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test and the Megacode test. They also must pass the written test with a score of 84% or higher. Upon successful completion, students receive an ACLS course completion card, valid for two years.
Course Objectives:
• Recognize and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
• Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use
• Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care
• Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes
• Recognize other life-threating clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death
• Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
